In 2005 I was awarded a design residency with “Greenstar”. At that time “Greenstar” was developing a large landfill site in a boggy area in the west of Ireland. On the site of the proposed landfill I came across a collection of abandoned cottages. I was struck by the thought that what was once a rural town-land was soon to become a site for waste disposal. My response was the temporary installation “Turf cottage”, a 1:1 replica of a traditional cottage built from turf (peat) sods. The turf sods, were all cut by hand on site and used as to build the cottage form. “Turf Cottage” was intended to act as a temporary marker in time, highlighting the transformation of land use before the installation itself became subsumed by landfill.
